In 1991, years before globalization became trendy in academic circles, Emerson College in Boston began a unique experiment in international education--it replicated most of its distinctive communication programs in a historic city in the heart of Europe through an entity called the European Institute for International Communication (EIIC). EIIC supplemented visiting Emerson-Boston faculty with professors from the nearby universities of Liege, Aachen and Maastricht and contracted with the University of Maastricht for library facilities. EIIC focused its recruiting on the students of Europe's international high schools and soon it impressed both high school counselors and their graduating seniors....
