1784 

Greeks who wanted to escape Ottoman rule moved to the closest major capital that offered a modicum of civil liberties. So Vienna became a great magnet for Greeks, especially those from NW Macedonia. Many of them succeeded in public service, trade, banking and the arts. With the encouragement of Adamantios Korais, the leader of the delayed Greek renaissance, they also started publishing books and eventually newspapers. The first seven Greek newspapers, starting in 1784, and magazines were started in Vienna. Most of them had closed by 1821, when the first newspaper appeared in the Greek mainland....
